Soldering the Unknown
Some skills seem impossible until you try them. For me, soldering fell squarely in that intimidating zone. It looked complex—something you needed classes or certifications to master, like welding. I had zero faith in my ability to do it. None.
As with most new projects, I did what I always do: I stewed. I researched. I worried. I watched countless YouTube videos, read soldering guides, and scrolled through forums. I hunted down the tools that could help me be successful and even found a 3D-printable "helping hands" device to hold wires steady. Naturally, I printed it.
Diving In With Doubt—and a Plan
Finally, I reached that crucial moment: time to try.
No audience. No judgment. Just me, a soldering iron, and a quiet room. I pulled up my notes, set the temperature on the iron, and got everything in place:
Opened the solder and the flux.
Stripped the ends of several wires.
Secured them into my new 3D-printed holder.
The inner voice of doubt whispered, “This is going to be a mess.” Still, I pressed on.

I reread my notes. “Smoke is okay.” Cool.
I grabbed a pick, applied flux to the wire, and touched the hot iron to the joint.
Then came the moment: I brought the solder to the heated joint. It flowed smoothly, easily, like it was meant to be there. Solder sticks to solder. When you get the heat and angle right, it glides like butter. If you make a mistake, reheat and adjust.
My smile said it all. It wasn’t scary anymore.
Why I Started Soldering in the First Place
So what inspired me to take on this mysterious skill?
My Jeep.
The rear window defroster tab had popped off. Without it, the defrost doesn’t work. And what’s the best fix? You guessed it—soldering it back on.
Have I done it yet? Not quite. But not because I’m scared—because I need to wait for warmer weather. Cold glass and soldering heat don’t mix unless you want shattered windows.
Skill Unlocked: Rooted in Grit
This journey wasn’t just about soldering a wire. It was about trusting myself to try something unfamiliar. To tinker until it worked. To feel the rush of triumph after hesitation.
And that’s what Rooted in Rides is all about. Jeep life isn’t just off-road trails and top-down adventures—it’s learning, growing, and taking challenges head-on.
Mantras that Got Me Through:
Trying is good. Not trying is bad.
Try. Tinker. Triumph.
A new skill joins the ever-growing Rooted N Red toolbox. Soldering: check.
