Do Botanicals Actually Do Anything in Handmade Soap?

Here's the short answer: mostly, no. Botanicals in handmade soap — the lavender buds, the rose petals, the pretty sprinkle of calendula on top — are almost always decoration. Soap is a high-pH environment, and the delicate compounds that make those botanicals special don't survive it. The color fades, the scent was never really theirs to begin with, and what's left behind is usually brown specks that look like dirt in your soap.

The Lavender Soap That Taught Me Everything
When I started making soap, I did what everyone else was doing. Everyone had a lavender soap with lavender buds, so I made a lavender soap with lavender buds.
You can probably guess what happened.
Those pretty purple buds didn't stay pretty or purple. They turned brown — not a warm, rustic brown, but the kind of brown that looks like specks of dirt embedded in your soap. Not something I really wanted to wash with, and definitely not something I wanted to hand to a customer.
That batch settled the question for me. I want soap that lasts. Soap that ages gracefully and doesn't go rancid. And the decorative botanicals were working against every one of those goals.
Why Don't Botanicals Survive in Soap?
I'll be honest — for a while I didn't know why it happened. I just knew what I saw. Here's what I've learned since.
Finished soap sits somewhere around pH 9 to 10 — a range confirmed in clinical research measuring alkaline handmade soap at pH 9.5 (Gfatter et al., 1997, Dermatology). That's genuinely alkaline — it's what makes soap soap. But a lot of what we love about botanicals is fragile. The pigments that make lavender purple and rose petals pink, and many of the delicate aromatic compounds, break down in that alkaline environment. The buds go brown because the chemistry that made them beautiful simply doesn't hold up.
And here's the part that matters more to me than looks: oils oxidize through a well-documented chain reaction triggered by light, heat, and trace metals — the same process that causes rancidity in any fat, whether it's in your pantry or your soap dish (NIH/PMC, "Lipid Oxidation in Foods and Its Implications on Proteins," 2023). [Non-Scientific/Anecdotal] In my own experience, plant material embedded in a bar holds moisture and its own plant oils, and that combination seems to speed the process along — that specific link is my observation from soapmaking, not something I've found spelled out in the research, though the underlying oxidation chemistry behind it is well established.

What Are the Dreaded Orange Spots?
If you've been around handmade soap long enough, you've heard of the Dreaded Orange Spots — orange or rust-colored patches that show up on a bar as the oils in it oxidize and go rancid, the same fatty-acid autoxidation process described above. A bar with DOS isn't dangerous so much as it's done — it smells off, it looks off, and it's not the soap you made anymore.
I formulate specifically to avoid this. It's a big part of why I got interested in soaps that are designed to age well instead of just survive their cure time. And it's a big part of why decorative botanicals don't make it into my bars: anything that invites moisture and unstable plant oils into a bar I want to last for years is working against the whole point.
So What Does Earn a Spot in My Soap?
I'm not anti-botanical. I'm anti-decoration-pretending-to-be-function. Here's my actual line, and I mean this literally: my line is where the test fails — where a botanical becomes more unappealing or detrimental to the product than useful.
Everything in my soap has to earn its place by doing a job:
Infused oils. Every soap I make is built on herb-infused oils. This is where the botanicals in my soap actually live — not sprinkled on top, but worked into the foundation.
Clays. I use clays for color, and they pull double duty — they're a colorant that behaves itself in high-pH soap and brings its own character to the bar.
Salt and brine. I love salt soaps and brine soaps. The salt isn't decoration; it changes the entire nature of the bar.
Oatmeal and pumice. When a bar needs gentle scrub, these earn their spot by actually scrubbing.
Essential oils — and only essential oils — for scent. Or nothing at all, letting the infused oils bring whatever they bring. And here's a secret from my lavender bud experiment: the buds never contributed much scent anyway. The lavender smell in a lavender soap was always the essential oil's job. The buds were just along for the ride, waiting to turn brown.
I go for functionality and let the personality of the soap speak for itself. I don't adjust soap for feel — I save that for my salves, where texture is the whole game.
But Botanical-Topped Soap Is So Pretty
It is! And it sells. I'm not going to pretend otherwise, and I'm not here to punch at makers who top their bars with petals — plenty of them make lovely soap.
But I'm a torn jeans, garden-loving, baseball cap and ponytail kind of girl. Either you like my stuff for what it is, or there are others who will put the cute stuff on top. My bars aren't dressed up for the photo. They're built for the shower, the sink, and the long haul.
How to Read a Handmade Soap Label
One takeaway, if you remember nothing else: don't read a soap label like a chemistry list. Read it like a story.
Pick what interests you — things you have a connection to. A scent that reminds you of your grandma.
Something you tried once and loved. A favorite memory. Or just the pull of wanting to try something new.
If it's natural, from the earth, and added with intention, you're reading the label right.
That's how I build every bar: nothing decorative, everything intentional.
